Año Nuevo State Reserve is the site of the largest mainland breeding colony in the world for the northern elephant seal. Measuring up to sixteen feet in length and weighing up to 2 1/2 tons, Ano Nuevo's elephant seals attract thousands of visitors every year. Although the breeding season runs December through March, the seals -- as well as sea lions, birds, and other marine mammals -- can be viewed practically year-round. Layered clothing, comfortable shoes, camera, and binoculars recommended. Lunch provided.
