Description: Preservation of species has become a major concern both in the U.S. and globally. Of course, we have also witnessed countless recent advances in molecular genetic technologies as well. As a result, the field of conservation genetics has emerged and grown as scientists have combined the use of genetic tools with efforts to improve the study and management of endangered and threatened species. We will examine three cases that demonstrate how simple information at the genetic level can provide insights to historical relationships, population structure, dispersal patterns, and social structure in animals, and how these insights can be critical to the preservation of species and habitats of concern.
